GVCA DEPARTMENT - Message From the President

Attracting more women into
the construction industry
Jeff MacIntyre

Attracting more women into the construction industry is essential for diversity and innovation within this traditionally male-dominated field

Women represent the largest pool of available talent. Here are some considerations need to do to attract and retain female talent:

  1. Educational Outreach:Continued collaboration with schools and universities to introduce construction-related programs to young women. Encourage them to explore STEM subjects and vocational training that align with construction careers.
  2. Female Role Models:Amplifying successful women who have excelled in construction through media, events, and workshops. Their stories inspire and demonstrate that women can thrive in this industry.
  3. Gender-Neutral Job Listings:Make job advertisements and descriptions more inclusive and avoid gender-biased language to ensure that women feel welcome and encouraged to apply.
  4. Supportive Work Environments:Continued efforts to create inclusive workplaces where women are treated with respect and equality.
  5. Training and Apprenticeships:Enhanced training and apprenticeship programs that cater to the unique needs of female workers, ensuring they feel well-prepared and confident in their roles.
  6. Work-Life Balance:Promote flexible work schedules and family-friendly policies to accommodate the needs of female employees who may have caregiving responsibilities. We seem to be the last industry to adopt the inevitable.
  7. Community Engagement:Continued focused discussion to dispel stereotypes and myths about women in construction and skilled trades, making it more socially acceptable and appealing.

GVCA is working hard for the industry to amplify the opportunities and identify strategies to make dramatic change to the ratios of men to women in our industry more equal.  We have a long way to go but we fortunately have a loud voice.
